Vishakapatanam – The Jewel of the East Coast

Visakhapatnam is a coastal city situated on the eastern shore of the district of Andhra Pradesh. Vishakapatanam is called ‘The Jewel of the East Coast’ and true to its name the town is flanked by the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal.Vishakapatanam is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh after Hyderabad and is located about 625 km from the state capital.  Vishakapatanam apart from being a port city is also an industrial city.Vishakapatanam is named after the god of Valor, Vishakha. Vishakapatanam was a part of the Kalinga Kingdom, under Ashoka’s rule in 260 B.C. The other dynasties that ruled Vishakapatanam were the Andhra Kings of Vengi, Pallava, Chola and Ganga dynasties. In the 15th century, Vishakapatanam became a part of the Vijayanagar Empire.

 
Vishakapatanam is considered one of the best tourism destinations in Andhra Pradesh. Vishakapatanam is a total tourist package. Vishakapatanam has everything from lakes to beaches, mountains to valleys, culture and heritage.From a small fishing village in the 20th century, Visakhapatnam has grown into an industrial hub and has various tourist attractions. Kailasagiri is a park developed by VUDA on a hilltop adjacent to the sea. A ride up the park offers views of the Bay of Bengal, Visakhapatnam city and the Eastern Ghats. A ropeway connects the park from the bottom of the hill.
 
Vishakapatanam is the home of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. India’s only submarine museum, INS Kursura, is in Vishakapatanam.Visakhapatnam has some of the best beaches in India. Rushikonda Beach, 6 km away from Visakhapatnam city is a favourite tourist spot. Bhimili-Visakhapatnam beach road is 30 km long and offers one of the best views of the sea and sand. Tenneti beach park is constructed on the cliff of Kailasagiri.
 
About 112 km from Visakhapatnam, Araku Valley is a popular hill station and is at an elevation of over 1000 m. On the way to Araku Hill station are the Borra caves which are naturally formed.Simhachalam, 16 km from Vishakapatanam, is a temple on a hill dedicated to Lord Narasimha. The beautifully carved natya mandapa with 16 pillars and the kalyana mandapa with 96 pillars are the highlights of the Simhachalam temple.Indira Gandhi Zoological Park spreads over an area of 250 hectares and houses more than 80 species.Visakhapatnam is surrounded by ancient Buddhist sites. Some of the Buddhist sites are Thotlakonda, 16 km from Visakhapatnam and Bavikonda, 15 km from Visakhapatnam. Pavuralakonda was a Buddhist settlement in the 1st century BC.Vishakapatanam is well connected by road, rail and air. The nearest airport and railway station are in the city.
