Things of Interest in Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg is the capital of the Alsace region in France, and with a 2007 population of 702,000, is an important commercial and industrial center. Strasbourg is situated on the River Rhine, and it's the second largest river port on this important waterway.

The name Strasbourg sounds more like a German city than a French one, and in fact control of this city has been traded back and forth by the two countries in various clashes throughout the centuries. France most recently laid claim to Strasbourg after World War II.

With the river Ill flowing through town, the city center is an island amongst various canals and has been largely pedestrianized as a historic center -- one major area known as the Grand Île (Main Island) has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This captivating city center is one reason Strasbourg is such a popular tourist stop.

The most famous building in Strasbourg is the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which is France's tallest and the world's fourth tallest church.

This ornate 15th century Gothic structure towers above the city. Another structure worth seeing is the 15th century Maison Kammerzell, which is a stunningly ornate medieval house from the former Holy Roman Empire. Venture to the 17th century Barrage Vauban on the river Ill to catch a beautiful view of this city's medieval landscape.

For its size, Strasburg features a wealth of museums. There is a unique separation of genre and period in the organization of art in Strasburg's museums, being split up into the period dating from pre-1681, then from 1681 to 1871, and from 1871 to present -- each in separate museums. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is a notable destination and one of the largest of its kind in France.

The mix of French and German culture makes for a unique and diverse experience. If you are looking for a place to experience the magic of Christmas, Strasburg's huge Christmas Market will certainly stir the spirit of St. Nick within you.
