Being a tourist and agricultural town in the Province of Alicante in Spain, Aspe is famous for many tourist attractions and an economy not based solely on tourism. Those are three thriving industries: the textile, the footwear and the agricultural industry. Therefore, it has a slightly different set up than most of its neighboring towns and cities.
Surprisingly, for a town with such diverse economic activities and several thriving industries, Aspe is a very small city with a covered area of only 71 square kilometers and a population of only 18,000 people according to the 2003 census. Due to the fact that the city has other active industries beside the tourism industry, it has not seen the same level of development as its other peer cities, because of this you are not very likely to find tall sky scrapers or futuristic malls here, instead, you are more likely to see a face of Spain that is not often seen by many: hard working people going about their lives and trying to make the most of what they have by doing the hardest work that they can.
This is not to say that Aspe is a dreary city by any means, in fact it has enough tourist attractions that a very sizable contribution is made to its economy by its tourist industry.
More and more development projects are also underway in the city, gearing it more towards attracting foreign tourists, the new golf course and the many ongoing property development projects are testament of this. Though, with this, the focus is shifting from agricultural and tertiary industries to the services industry, Aspe still has many long years to go before it becomes a full-fledged tourist city.
