Over the centuries, the city played host to a great many political events and, during the wars for Scottish Independence, fell under English rule only to be reclaimed by the locals under the leadership of Robert the Bruce. In retaliation, the English burnt the city down, but this was not enough to stop the Scottish people. They rebuilt the city, calling it New Aberdeen, and ensured that their new home was strongly fortified against further attacks.
Today, Aberdeen is known as a city with a strong presence in the oil industry and has received yet another couple of nicknames as the Oil Capital of Europe and the Energy Capital of Europe. The industry has helped boost Aberdeen's economy, but the city certainly doesn't rely on this side of its personality to impress tourists: Aberdeen has won the prestigious Britain in Bloom award ten times, breaking the record for its fantastic floral displays.
