Know More About Aberdeen

Despite of you're from the south of Scotland or the south of England, Aberdeen city is considered as one of Scotland's most thriving cities. It is also known for a fantastic place to visit with surprising culture difference though Scots may understand more about the local accent than those who haven't yet been familiar to the sound of the Scottish tongue.

Aberdeen is a city of many nicknames. It's known as the Granite City, the Grey City and, far more majestically, as the Silver City with the Golden Sands. The titles clearly refers to the material and colouring of Aberdeen's buildings, though the city has managed to attain an attractive charm that makes several areas ideal for snapping a few attractive photographs. The city has many fascinating facts that will help boost any tourist visit, however - some of which may not even be known by the locals.

For example, the north east area of Scotland that Aberdeen occupies has been settled for some 8000 years, when settlers decided to make the most of the area's two rivers, the Dee and the Don, for protection and water supplies in their habitation.

The city itself began as two distinctive burghs, Old and New Aberdeen. Old Aberdeen was positioned at the mouth of the River Don and New Aberdeen at the Denburn estuary of River Dee. Over the centuries, the city played host to a great many political events and, during the wars for Scottish Independence, fell under English rule only to be reclaimed by the locals under the leadership of Robert the Bruce. In retaliation, the English burnt the city down, but this was not enough to stop the Scottish people. They rebuilt the city, calling it New Aberdeen, and ensured that their new home was strongly fortified against further attacks.

Today, Aberdeen is known as a city with a strong presence in the oil industry and has received yet another couple of nicknames as the Oil Capital of Europe and the Energy Capital of Europe. The industry has helped boost Aberdeen's economy, but the city certainly doesn't rely on this side of its personality to impress tourists: Aberdeen has won the prestigious Britain in Bloom award ten times, breaking the record for its fantastic floral displays.
