It stands to reason that a city that is commonly referred to as the "Windy City" would be home to a healthy number of roofing companies. A story ran in the Chicago Republican that a cow in a barn had kicked a lantern, which began a small fire which quickly enveloped the entire barn.
From there it spread rapidly, burning from October 8 to October 10. About twenty-three years later the writer of the article said he made the story up.After the fire, the streets were rebuilt in a grid pattern, which many people say made wind tunnels between the tall buildings in the center of town. However statistics on wind speeds in various cities don't bear this out. Indeed, Boston's average wind strengths are higher.
The third reason is quite comical, rather like an old-fashioned newspaper cartoon. It purports that the hot air that is regularly spewed forth by the city's politicians contributes to increased air currents. That's probably true, but then you can say that about any city in the country.
There is probably a lot of truth in each of these stories and they are very entertaining. Chicago is a great place to live and thankfully there are lots of reputable roofing companies to keep residential, commercial and industrial roofs in great shape.
